We welcome children's NHS dentist referrals for orthodontic treatment at East Midlands Orthodontics.

If your child has been referred to us by your dentist for NHS orthodontic treatment, we very much look forward to meeting them.
Orthodontic treatment is provided by the NHS to children under the age of 18 who need treatment the most, and over the years we have treated thousands of referred patients. We want you and your child to be involved in your treatment and to understand everything that is going on so we will take the time to explain everything to you before starting treatment.
All new patients start the process by having an assessment with one of our orthodontists who will examine your child's teeth and look at what needs to be done.
For some patients this will mean waiting until all adult teeth have erupted and for others, they will be able to start treatment soon after. For a few of our patients, the alignment of their teeth might not be poor enough to qualify for NHS treatment but don’t worry, we have other options that you and your child might like to consider.
If you have been referred to us for early treatment, this is because your dentist has noticed a discrepancy with the relationship between your upper and lower teeth in which case we are likely to use a special removable brace to help correct this before we fit your fixed brace.
We want to give you the best possible smile at the end of treatment and need your help to achieve this. You can help us by:
Keeping your teeth and brace really clean throughout treatment
Avoiding eating anything too hard, crunchy or chewy so as to avoid damaging the brace and wires
Wearing any elastics as we have asked you to
Turning up for all your appointments on time
Wearing removable braces and retainers as we have asked you to
If one of your brackets comes off or you snap or bend the arch wire, just give us a call and we will arrange an appointment for you to come in and have the brace repaired.
Yes, you will need to wear a retainer once your fixed brace is removed and this should continue to be worn for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight.
A functional brace is a removable brace used to correct the relationship between your upper and lower teeth. It’s usually worn full time for a period of at least six months before fixed braces are used to straighten your teeth.
Unfortunately not, if you are an NHS patient we will treat you with metal brackets but you can customise your brace with whatever coloured elastics you like!
Most of our patients complete treatment in around 18 months but this can be longer or shorter depending on what needs to be done. We’ll let you know how long we think treatment will take at the start.
Elastics help to move certain teeth or to change the relationship between your upper and lower teeth. During the planning stage we will let you know if you are likely to need elastics.

The tiny metal brackets we attach to each tooth allow us to grip the tooth and to move in into a new position.
The wire that is attached to each bracket, exerts a very gentle force on each tooth which causes it to start moving. Throughout treatment, we will use different wires which will cause different movements all aimed at giving you a perfect final result. Elastics are used to move certain teeth or a group of teeth and may also be used to change the way your top and bottom teeth fit together.
You will very quickly get used to having a brace and any initial soreness will soon wear off. Using a special dental wax on any brackets that are rubbing will also make treatment more comfortable and the majority of our NHS patients tell us, after a few short weeks, they hardly notice their brace at all. One of the advantages of NHS braces is that you can customise them with different colour elastic ligatures (the small ring of elastic that holds the wire into the bracket) and will get the opportunity to change the colours at every appointment.
